Sustainable Development Goals summit  
Three hundred people representing business, government, iwi, NGOs and academia, gathered in Wellington on Monday for the first inaugural NZ Sustainable Development Goals Summit. SBC members Victoria University, Sanford, Vector, Air New Zealand and Thinkstep were all there as organisers, sponsors or speakers, describing how business is using the goals in its projects, planning and strategy. Two years tackling sustainable business
Abbie Reynolds has been SBC's executive director for two years now, helping businesses do better for the environment, community and economy. A big milestone! She's written this reflective piece for Idealog, about the top trends and goals driving sustainable business in NZ in 2018, examing capital markets, investment and the Sustainable Development Goals. 
WBCSD's top issues to tackle
Abbie Reynolds was in Montreux, Switzerland, last week at the World Business Council for Sustainable Development's Liaison Delegate Meeting. WBCSD President Peter Bakker predicted the top trends in the next five years will include: the cost of capital and future of work. Watch her Vlog about the event here.
Jeffery Sachs on Radio NZ
RNZ's Kim Hill interviewed renowned economist and UN advisor Professor Jeffery Sachs about sustainable development, ahead of the SDG Summit in Wellington. Professor Jeffery explains how we can transform the way we do business and help transform our world. It's 45 minutes long but well worth a listen.
Aurecon switches to carbon zero electricity
Aurecon NZ have switched to a certified carbon zero electricity provider, which will reduce their carbon emissions by 37,000 kilograms a year. The idea was first raised by a staffer in Tauranga, exploring how the company could reduce emissions. Read more about Aurecon NZ's sustainability initiatives here.

Applications for SBC's 2018 professional development programme, called Sustainable leadership in a changing world, close tomorrow. The programme aims to give participants new skills and thinking that will help them navigate complex environmental and social issues like climate change. Find out more here.
SDG Sector Roadmaps released
SBC member ERM and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development have teamed up to develop the Sustainable Development Goals Sector Roadmap Guidelines. They are designed to help companies articulate a common vision for how their industry is using the goals to optimise business value. 
Ravensdown's hi-tech fertiliser tool
Ravensdown is adding an aerial imaging tool to its top dressing fleet, that's adapted military surveillance and space exploration technologies. The tool, which was developed for local use with MPI and Massey University, improves how fertiliser is applied to hillsides. It uses a camera that can analyse the nutrients present in soil from the air. The new technology will bring greater efficiencies and environmental outcomes.  
Global solar capacity grows faster than fossil fuels
For the first time in 2017, global solar capacity grew faster than all fossil fuels combined, including coal, oil and gas-fired power stations. Read more in the latest annual report on global trends in renewable energy finance, from the UN Environment Programme and Bloomberg New Energy Finance. 
Draft Productivity Commission report due 
The Productivity Commission is releasing its draft report on the transition to a low emissions economy tomorrow morning. Keep an eye out. SBC will review it and get in touch with members to let them know how we plan to respond. You can read our submission to the commission here.
