Brewing sustainable beverages
This week's Sunday Star-Times article, based on a UN Sustainable Development Goal, features Lion's new micro-brewery in Christchurch. It's been designed with responsible consumption and production in mind (Goal 12), using solar panels, rain water storage, an electric vehicle fleet and waste recycling schemes.
Sustainable consumption is no longer niche
"The massive jump in consumer concern over plastic pollution - which Colmar Brunton dubbed the "next sugar" – shows us that campaigns and personal observations are affecting the attitudes of a wide range of consumers across New Zealand society". Check out Alison Herft's blog, following the release of the Better Futures report, and SBC's video of the launch event, featuring Abbie Reynolds, Sarah Bolger and the Meridian Energy team.
Auckland Bridge lightens up
Auckland Harbour Bridge has had a makeover, with a lighting display made up of 90,000 LED lights powered by solar panels. It's the first major bridge in the world to have its lighting sourced entirely from solar power. The makeover marks the start of a 10-year "smart energy" partnership between Vector and Auckland Council. Read more here and check out videos of the show here.
