Air New Zealand

As Air New Zealand's national airline, Air New Zealand is integral to our nation's brand. It is our responsibility to act and promote sustainability to reflect New Zealand's commitment to the environment; and hence maintain our image as a tourism destination and 'green' exporting nation.

To deliver on that responsibility, over the past eight years Air New Zealand has undertaken a wide range of initiatives aimed at becoming the world's most environmentally sustained airline. The environmental sustainability programme incorporates airline operations & engineering marketing, staff, supplies, customers, tourist and external partners.

Sustainability is led by Capt David Morgan (Chief Flight Operations and Safety Officer) whose programme spans the business operations.

Highlights of the programme include: Partnering with the Department of Conservation (DOC) to protect and enhance our natural environment through investment in biodiversity projects on New Zealand's Great Walks network, while continuing to provide species transfers enabling DOC to relocate some of our country's most endangered species.

We also have an agreement with Antarctica NZ to support environmental science research projects, and will provide the opportunity for young scientist and skilled staff members to work in Antarctica in each of the next three year - Development of an internal green Team which now numbers 3,500 staff members. The Green Team have had the opportunity to learn about ways to reduce their personal environmental footprint; participate in large group activities from tree planting to beach clean ups; and more recently become involved in the DOC partnership through activities such as trap line setting to aid pest eradication in sensitive areas.

Establishing the Air New Zealand Environment Trust, which manages the airline's carbon offset programme and which has invested in multiple environmental projects around New Zealand. The Trust has also established Kids Restore NZ, which invest in school projects giving students the chance to protect and restore their local environment.

A wide range of operational initiatives are undertaken, including investment in a young, fuel efficient fleet; a biofuel test flight; a test flight designed to demonstrate to the aviation industry the potential for carbon emission reduction, in which all practical operational constraints were removed; tailored arrivals into San Francisco and LA; installation of technical solutions such as zonal dryers to reduce moisture trapped in the aircraft, and blended winglets to reduce drag; reductions in electricity consumption; a ground fleet running on biodiesel; sustainability specifications included in supplier contracts.
