Annual Council Meeting & AGM 2016

The SBC Annual Council Meeting & AGM 2016 was held on 6 July at AUT Business School in Auckland, with over 100 Council Member and Liaison Delegate reps and guests in attendance. The theme of the meeting was ‘leadership with a future focus’.

Capt David Morgan, SBC Advisory Board Deputy Chair and Chief Pilot AirNZ, stepped in for Chair Alistair Davis (who was unable to fly due to fog) as MC for the meeting. David provided some useful analogies between flying and sustainability, and what Air New Zealand is dong to address climate change issues.

Abbie Reynolds, SBC Executive Director since April, started by acknowledging members efforts on their sustainability journeys. Abbie discussed the work that’s been done in the 5 priority areas, SBC’s newly developed Business Case for Sustainability, and what is planned for the year ahead. Paula Bennett
, Minister for Climate Change Issues, provided her perspective via video on what the Paris Agreement means for New Zealand, the role she
wants Government to play and what business can do in tracking towards a low
carbon economy.

Karen Silk, Climate Governance Group Chair and Westpac’s GM Commercial and Institutional Banking, discussed what’s been done to date, the plan for the year ahead and what business can do to support climate change initiatives.

Jacqueline Smart, Head of Planning at J Walter Thompson, and Liz Read, Director of Reputation Matters, discussed international research on a country’s brands, and the leadership imperatives facing businesses and brands in their quest to authentically connect with increasingly conscious consumers.

(CEO, Auckland International Airport Limited), Jane Taylor (Chair, Landcare Research and Director, Silver Fern Farms) and Mike Sang (CEO, Ngāi Tahu
Holdings Corporation Limited) presented on the roles they play in their business, and discussed the role of leadership and integrating
long term thinking. They provided useful insights on their roles as leaders at CEO and Board level to help ensure social, financial and environmental sustainability is embedded into their everyday operations and future-focussed planning.
