Mercury

Mercury

Mercury is a company with a long heritage in renewable energy with their generation from 100% renewable sources. Under the Mercury brand and other speciality brands, including the leading prepay service GLOBUG, Mercury also has a proven capability and technical expertise in solar, battery and off-grid solutions.

Hydro and geothermal power stations operated by Mercury generate renewable energy sufficient for 850,000 New Zealand homes. The nine hydro stations dating back to the 1920s make up the Waikato River Hydro System, accounting for about 10% of the country’s total electricity supply that is predominantly hydro. Mercury’s partnerships with local Maori landowners have seen a renaissance in geothermal energy, enabling the completion of three major geothermal projects in recent years: Kawerau (2008), Nga Awa Purua (2010) and Ngatamariki (2013).

In 2018, Mercury expanded its renewable reach through the acquisition of a 19.99% stake in Tilt Renewables which has a growing portfolio of wind and solar projects in Australasia. Mercury’s wind farm is currently under construction at Turitea in the Manawatu.

Mercury’s mission of Energy Freedom for all New Zealanders is brought to life through their support of the adoption of electric vehicles and bikes, and efforts to help New Zealand homes to be warm, dry and healthy.
