The year in review – Mike Burrell

SBC Executive Director Mike Burrell signs off by reflecting on some highlights from the past year.

This will be the last of my updates for 2021, before what I hope will be a restful and relaxing break for you after what has been an incredibly tough year. So let me start by saying a sincere thank you to you all – our wonderful network of members – for all you have contributed over the last 12 months.

After the year that was 2020, I don’t think anyone quite imagined the enormity of the challenges that would come down the pipeline in 2021. It is remarkable to see what you all have achieved, as well as what we have achieved together, against the backdrop of the ongoing uncertainty of the global pandemic.   Despite the challenges Covid-19 continues to bring, together we have continued to drive our important work in sustainability and climate action.

And what a year it has been for that work – we delivered joint CLC and SBC responses to both the Climate Change Commission’s draft advice, as well as the government’s Emissions Reduction Plan discussion document.

Thank you all once again for your engagement and contributions throughout these processes, it was a huge amount of work, and the results are something we should all be incredibly proud of. I look forward to continuing this work alongside you all as the Government works toward delivering its final Emissions Reduction Plan next year.

In addition to this work, we also stood up our new Thriving People pillar with an incredibly engaging work programme that will continue into 2022.

And we have also continued to adapt to the Covid-19 world by developing and delivering our Leadership pillar through our virtual connections.

Internally here at SBC it has also been an incredibly busy year. We have seen our SBC staff increase, with six new faces joining the team, and just this week we have welcomed Kate Ferguson back from parental leave. It has been great to bring so many talented new people on board who have made a real impact in all the work they have taken on. We are all looking forward to continuing the meaningful work we do with you across all of our programmes in the new year.

For now, I wish you all a happy and safe holiday period, which I hope includes a well-deserved break and hopefully some summer sunshine.

I look forward to being able to share our plans for connecting with you all in the New Year as we look to build on the great work we are doing together in 2022.

Until then, take care, ka kite anō.
