Countdown phasing out straws
Countdown announced this week that it will stop selling single-use straws. The company estimates that the change will remove as many as 11.6 million straws from the waste stream each year. General manager of corporate affairs and sustainability Kiri Hannifin said the company is focused on removing as much unnecessary plastic as possible from its stores. 
Vector Urban Forest
Vector has launched its Vector Urban Forest with a promise to plant two native trees for every tree cut down to protect Auckland’s powerlines. Vector hopes this Forest project will help the company contribute positively to regenerating Auckland’s ecosystems and increasing canopy cover across the city.
Zero Carbon Bill submissions published
The submissions and summary of the Zero Carbon Bill consultation have been publicly released. Key themes from the submissions include:
- 91 per cent of respondents said they wanted a target of net zero emissions across all greenhouse gases by 2050 set in legislation now.
- 96 per cent of respondents supported the establishment of a Climate Change Commission, with an advisory role to Government.
- 92 per cent of respondents thought the Bill should include provisions to help NZ adapt to the effects of climate change.
New member: Ministry for the Environment
We welcome a new Associate Member this week, the Ministry for the Environment, who sees business leadership as key to addressing some of New Zealand's biggest environmental challenges, such as moving to a low-emission economy, improving our water, seas and soils, and growing great cities.

New sustainability reports are out! Toyota NZ's report showcases the company's new sustainability framework, Wellington Zoo's report highlights local and global action, including hosting 200 delegates from 13 countries at a conference on the future of zoos and aquariums, and Silver Fern Farms' report talks about the business's sustainable chain of care, and strategies to 2020. 
And new guest blog from Lisa Martin, GM Sustainability at Sanford, talks about how the company's
integrated reporting journey encouraged more integrated thinking, more meaningful engagement with stakeholders and facilitated greater collaboration towards their sustainable aspirations.
Indigenous youth employment symposium
Jody Hamilton, SBC's recent Social Impact Manager, is contributing to the upcoming International Indigenous Youth Employment Symposium. The event will look at rangatahi engagement, youth entrepreneurship skills, succession planning in the workplace, organisational collaboration and will highlight youth employment successes.
