Renewable energy park for Chch  

Christchurch Airport has announced it will use 400 hectares of land to generate renewable energy. Stage one will deliver a 220-hectare solar array able to generate 150 megawatts – enough for 30,000 homes, or about 20% of Christchurch’s current residential electricity use.

Cutting infrastructure carbon  

WSP in New Zealand has committed to halving the carbon footprint of its infrastructure designs and advice by 2030. The company sees the biggest contribution it can make to 2050 net zero ambitions is working with clients and partners to halve the carbon footprint of infrastructure designs and advice. WSP has already made the commitment in the UK, Denmark and Sweden.

Making EV charging smoother

Genesis Energy is working with Christchurch-based company Evnex to trial new EV smart charging technology. Evnex’s smart charger can safely reduce overnight charging to a few hours and communicate with the grid to smooth demand. Charging accessibility is seen as a key to boosting EVs from 30,000 now to 1.5m by 2035.

CoGo and NZ Post were recognised for their climate action in the Sustainable Business Network 2021 Awards last week, with CoGo winning the Climate Action Innovator category and New Zealand Post commended in the Climate Action Leader category.
The New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research Limited won the Public sector and non-listed category, and Transpower New Zealand the Newcomer category, in the CPA Australia Integrated Reporting Awards New Zealand
And Christchurch International Airport Ltd was a finalist in the New Zealand Tourism Awards for both the Tourism New Zealand Industry Collaboration Award and the Toitū Envirocare Environment Award.

Mind the reporting gap

Earlier this year OCS achieved Toitū carbonzero certification across both its Australian and New Zealand businesses. Read more in their latest sustainability report. And Synlait Milk's third sustainability report shows how they achieved a significant improvement in the milk nutrition company’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Growing regenerative food production 

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development and partners have announced Regen10, an ambitious collective action plan to scale regenerative food production systems, worldwide within a decade. The initiative involves more than 500 million farmers, with about USD $60 billion per year deployed to finance the transition.
