Season’s greetings 

In our final edition of Pānui for 2021, SBC Executive Director Mike Burrell signs off by reflecting on some highlights from the past year. SBC will be closed 23 Dec to 5 Jan, and Pānui will resume in mid-January. Best wishes for a happy and restful holiday to all of our members from the team at SBC.

Unwrapping new climate initiatives 

Recent Government announcements include a new Climate Emergency Response Fund to spend $4.5 billion from the ETS on meeting climate goals, a new Sustainable Biofuels Mandate, to require fuel wholesalers to deploy biofuels as a part of their fuel supply to cut emissions from 2023, and an extension of road user charge exemptions for light Electric Vehicles until 31 March 2024.

Welcome back Kate Ferguson

This week we welcome back Kate Ferguson, our Climate Manager, after a year on parental leave. Kate is looking forward to connecting with members next year and wishes everyone a rejuvenating holiday.

What next for lowering emissions in NZ?

Peter Simons, MD DB Breweries, looks at three fundamental focus areas for New Zealand to make a world-leading transition to a low-carbon economy. Peter has been a valued Board member and Climate Leaders Coalition signatory. We wish him bon voyage at Christmas and all the best in his new role at Heineken in Europe.

Brighter future for climate action

Toitū Envirocare has recognised seven top performing clients for reducing their carbon footprint and minimising environmental impacts with the Toitū Brighter Future Awards, including: 
KPMG New Zealand: Climate Action - medium organisation, Counties-Manukau Health: Climate Action - large organisation, Silver Fern Farms for Climate Action +50k tonnes organisation and the top reducer (volume) categories, and Toyota Financial Services for Environmental Management.

Kerbside waste into renewable gas

Firstgas Group and Ecogas are celebrating New Zealand’s first large-scale biogas project, transforming organic kerbside waste into renewable biomethane gas. Once completed, the plant will supply the equivalent of 9,000 homes and businesses, eliminating more than 11,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

NZTE works directly with exporters, helping them tell their sustainability story to world markets, and has refreshed its sustainability content online with new resources

Our air includes WHO guidelines   

The Ministry for the Environment and Stats NZ have published Our air 2021, with the latest data on NZ's air quality. This report includes analysis of the World Health Organization 2021 air quality guidelines released on 23 Sept.

Leading Women Awards open

WBCSD's Leading Women Awards recognise outstanding female leaders and their work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This video has more on WBCSD’s approach to progress this work with members and partners. Nominations are open until 9 January 2022.
