Rainbow Employee Network for Z

Leaving coal behind: Fonterra and ANZCO | Fonterra has announced its Stirling cheese factory will move away from coal. This will make Stirling Fonterra’s first 100% renewable thermal energy site, a significant step towards the Co-op’s goal of getting out of coal all together by 2037. By switching to wood biomass, the site’s annual emissions will reduce by 18,500 tonnes of CO2 – the equivalent of taking more than 7,000 cars off the road. | | | |
ANZCO Foods Canterbury has announced electric boilers previously retired at its Ashburton site have now been reinstalled. The move – part of Meridian Energy’s decarbonisation programme – is the company’s first step away from coal-fired boilers at the site. Shifting back to electricity meant 2800 tonnes of coal and 5600 metric tonnes of carbon would be removed from the environment every year. The extra electricity use would be 14GWH.

Breeding more sustainable cattle |
LIC is investing heavily into dairy genetics to breed cattle that burp less methane into the atmosphere, in a move that could allow the industry to keep its cows and meet emissions targets. LIC had committed $17.1 million to research and development for 2021-22, one of the largest investments in the primary sector. “We can develop genetics that allow farmers to have fewer cows, or the same number, which produce more milk and lower emissions,” says LIC board chairman Murray King.

New Centre for Sustainable Finance | The new Centre for Sustainable Finance in Aotearoa New Zealand Toitū Tahua, has been announced to implement the Sustainable Finance Forum’s 2030 roadmap for a sustainable financial system. The CSF will support further collaboration in the finance sector on aligning day-to-day financial decision-making with New Zealand’s long-term wellbeing goals.
