Congratulations Karen Silk – RBNZ new Assistant Governor  

SBC warmly congratulates Westpac’s Karen Silk on her recent appointment as the Assistant Governor/General Manager of Economics, Financial Markets and Banking at the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. Karen has made an outstanding contribution during her time as SBC’s Chair, and our loss is most certainly the RBNZ’s gain. The SBC team has thoroughly enjoyed working alongside Karen, they and the wider membership have benefitted immensely from her inspiring leadership, expertise, and wholehearted commitment to sustainability and climate action.  We wish Karen all the best for this exciting new role and look forward to seeing the enormous impact she will have in it. 

Border changes announced 

The Prime Minister’s address to a BusinessNZ audience today announced the end of MIQ for all vaccinated travellers, along with a timeline of key dates during 2022 when different groups of travellers would be able to come to New Zealand. More information here.

Chapman Tripp signs up to Net Zero Lawyers Alliance

Chapman Tripp is the first New Zealand law firm to sign up to the Net Zero Lawyers Alliance, a collaboration of top-tier law firms committed to accelerating the transition to net zero emissions by 2050. The Alliance, launched in 2021 as part of London Climate Action Week, is an approved accelerator for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Race to Zero.

DLA Piper signs Power Purchase Agreement

As part of its drive to reach decarbonisation targets, DLA Piper has signed a corporate Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with NextEnergy Group, providing financial support towards the construction of a solar energy farm that will provide renewable energy to its UK and European offices. It is the first law firm in the world to undertake a corporate PPA.

2021 Deloitte Top 200 Awards

Congratulations to the SBC and CLC member companies who have been announced as finalists in the Deloitte Top 200 Awards. We look forward to celebrating the winners when they are announced on 2 March.

NZIIS consultation opens

Consultation is now open on the Government’s proposed New Zealand Income Insurance Scheme. Jointly developed by Government, BusinessNZ and CTU, the Scheme is proposed to be administered in a similar way to ACC.

Consultation runs until 26 April. Find more information on the proposal and provide feedback here.

Doing good in the community: Eastland Group and Suncorp

Eastland Group is employing a record 8 interns over the summer period, giving students real world industry experience that Eastland Group chief executive Matt Todd says will benefit the region in the future.

Suncorp New Zealand has donated $30,000 to New Zealand Red Cross’ Pacific Tsunami Appeal after Tonga's January volcanic eruption and tsunami. CEO Jimmy Higgins says supporting communities to recovery from natural hazards is a key part of its purpose to build futures and protect what matters.
