New sea-level data reinforces need to build climate resilience

For the first time, New Zealanders can see how much and how fast sea-level will rise in their local area via a new online tool from NZ SeaRise: Te Tai Pari O Aotearoa programme.The new data reveals sea-level is rising faster than we thought and continues to highlight the need to urgently build Aotearoa’s climate resilience as part of our climate change response.   

FirstGas Group appoints Future Fuels GM

Firstgas Group has appointed James Irvine to lead a new department dedicated to future fuels, including hydrogen and biogas. James will lead Firstgas’ renewable energy strategy, new technologies, initiatives, programmes and partnerships.     

Woollen kayak reduces plastic use

Torpedo 7, a subsidiary of The Warehouse Group, has created the world’s first woollen kayak, replacing models made with two kilograms of plastic or 400 plastic bags. The Kakapo kayak is 35 percent wool fibres and polyethylene. 

Fonterra extends on-farm trials with seaweed

Fonterra is expanding its on-farm trials of adding seaweed as a supplement to cattle feed to reduce emissions. Research has shown that Asparagopsis seaweed has the potential to reduce emissions by more than 80 per cent in laboratory trials

Adaptation and Mitigation must go hand in hand

Havana Coffee Works Roastery opens in Auckland

Lion owned Havana Coffee Works has opened in Auckland’s Parnell. Like in Wellington, the roastery and espresso bar, features a Loring S70 Roaster, which produces 70 percent fewer carbon emissions. Read the full details here.

Climate Response Accelerator 2022

This week we profile Donut, which accelerates businesses’ sustainability journey with an intelligent carbon accounting platform designed to make it easy to identify, measure and reduce carbon footprints. To do so, it brings together historical carbon footprint data, integrating Xero and supply chain analysis to automate emissions reporting and mitigation.

NEW: CLC Masterclass: Climate Minister James Shaw on what the Emissions Reduction Plan means for business

With the Government’s Emissions Reduction Plan (ERP) due out in May, join us for a session with the Minister of Climate Change Hon. James Shaw for what the plan means for business. 
The ERP and associated Emissions Budgets will set the direction for climate action through to 2035 in a range of areas including energy, transport, waste, agriculture, construction, and financial services. 
Businesses have a critical role to play in delivering the ERP and this is your opportunity to hear directly from the Minister and ask questions.

NEW: Climate Governance Workshop Series

Boards are now accountable, by law, for ensuring that climate risk is adequately managed. Our board-level climate risk programme is designed to help non-Executive Directors understand their role and responsibility on climate change risk management to empower and enable them to take action in their influential roles.  

This is the first of a 4 part workshop series delivered by Deloitte in partnership with Toitū Tahua: Centre for Sustainable Finance and the Sustainable Business Council.
