No more coal for Silver Fern Farms

Silver Fern Farms has committed to ending coal use across its plants by 2030, ahead of Government targets. Silver Fern Farms secured Government funding in April through the Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority enabling it to fast-track plans for its plants at Christchurch and Balclutha, which will see it halve its coal consumption by 2023. 

Powering up with organic waste 

Fonterra, Beca, Firstgas Group and EECA have undertaken a study which found that organic waste is a viable alternative to New Zealand’s residential gas supplies, with potential to replace nearly 20% of the country's total gas usage by 2050. Fonterra already has biodigesters at its Tirau and Darfield sites, working to process fats and proteins in wastewater, cleaning it, and creating a gas that can save up to 19 times the emissions. Waste Management Wellington 

Waste Management’s Wellington team has taken over the Hutt City Council waste and recycling contract with four new EV trucks. Currently in transit, the trucks' arrival will make Wellington the home of Waste Management’s largest EV fleet in New Zealand.

Te Ara Tupua Alliance launches at Te Tatau o Te Pō Marae

Representatives of Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, Downer NZ, HEB Construction, Tonkin + Taylor and iwi mana whenua have marked a key milestone, forming the Te Ara Tupua Alliance. Te Ara Tupua is a project to create a walking and cycling link between Wellington and Lower Hutt, enabling more environmentally-friendly transport route options.

Lion Co has released its 2020 Sustainability Report, highlighting the progress it is making in emissions and water use reductions, and the success of its Alcohol&Me programme in keeping Kiwis safe when they drink. One of Lion's key achievements last year was becoming New Zealand's first large-scale, Toitū carbonzero certified beverage company.
